A hand-powered backup for Ring's next smart lock

Ring says a user can turn the dial to power a depleted lock. Our checklist covers access, connectivity and subscriptions for the announced early-2027 product.

The announced lock

Ring's October 9 release describes a smart lock with a dial designed to provide power by hand after its battery is depleted. It lists fingerprint, keypad, app and Alexa access through Amazon Sidewalk connectivity. The stated U.S. purchase window is early 2027. Cameras announced in the same release have separate availability dates.

The household checklist

Check Sidewalk coverage, installation requirements and any recurring plan needed for the features you intend to use. Ask how a guest receives access, how an old permission is removed and which access methods remain available without connectivity. Read the instructions for the shipping version before planning a replacement.

Our assessment

A physical power fallback is easy to explain to another member of the household. The remaining access paths deserve equally clear instructions. We have not tested this lock's security, outage behavior or resistance to attack. The announcement supports a list of questions to take to the seller, and offers no basis for a security rating.
